How to create Virtual Directory in Internet Information Services (IIS)

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) allows to access information through Web using Virtual Directory.

Step (1)     Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Management Console window.

Step (2)     Right mouse click on Default Web Site. IIS Management Console window will display the pop-up menu. Click on New… menu item. The window will display Virtual Directory… sub menu. Click on Virtual Directory… menu item.

Step (3)     When you click on Virtual Directory… menu item, IIS Management Console window will display Virtual Directory Creation Wizard dialog to allow you to create Virtual Directory.

Step (4)     Click on Next > button to continue. The dialog will display Alias text field to enter Alias name for the Virtual Directory. You must give Alias name to the Virtual Directory. Follow the same naming conventions that we would name a directory.

Step (5)     After entering the Alias name, Next > button gets enabled and click on Next > button to go to next step in the wizard window. Once you click on Next > button, the wizard window will display Directory field to allow you to select the physical directory location. To select the directory location click on Browse… button.

Step (6)     Once you selected the Directory, Next > button gets enabled and click on Next > button. The wizard will display Access Permissions to allow you to select what access permissions you want to set for this Virtual Directory.

Step (7)     Once you set the Access Permissions, click on Next > button. The wizard will create the Virtual Directory. Click on Finish button to close the wizard.
