Windows 10 – File Explorer running slow

All of sudden, File Explorer on my Windows 10 system running very slow. Every time when I open it, showing the progress in path bar (or address bar), and taking lot of time to show the content. And also, it is not allowing to select the listed files; when attempt to open the file, the window is freezing. Struggled a lot for couple of days with this inconsistent behavior of File Explorer and finally tried few settings and now it is working as I expected. Thought to share this with you, hence this article.

Step 1. I thought to verify the indexing options. Usually when set this, it helps to list the content in File Explorer bit faster. So, I opened the Indexing Options, from Control panel.

It showing “Indexing is not running.” message in the Index Options dialog. It seems, the service related to indexing is not running. Either we can start the service, or follow the below steps to rebuild the index.

Step 2. I clicked on, Advanced button from Index Options dialog. It opened, Advanced Options dialog to allow us to set the advanced options.

Advanced Indexing Options

From the Troubleshooting section of it, I clicked on Rebuild button. It shows the below message box, and I clicked on OK button to proceed to continue with the indexing. I know, it will take little bit time to complete the indexing. But, will helpful to speedup the searching the files and other things.

Rebuilding the index might take a long time to complete. Some views
and search results might be incomplete until rebuilding is finished. --------------------------- OK Cancel ---------------------------

Step 3. I opened File Explorer and observed that, it is working fine after setting the indexing options.
