Project Management – Knowledge Areas

We have discussed “Project Management Process Groups” in our Previous Article. Like Process Groups, all the processes are categorized into 10 Knowledge Areas.

A Knowledge Area is defined by its knowledge requirements and described as its processes, practices, inputs, outputs, tools, and techniques. As Processes are logically linked, Knowledge Areas are also interrelated.

How the Processes are logically linked?

Each Process in Project Management has some activities associated with it. Each Activity may need some inputs to perform the activity; once the activity is done, it may produce some outputs. The outputs of one activity may be inputs to another activity. Relatively, inputs to the Processes may be outputs of some other Processes. Hence Processes are logically linked.

Lets’ brief about these Knowledge Areas:

Ten Knowledge Areas

As mentioned above, all the Project Management processes are categorized into related Knowledge Areas. All the processes are led to meet the objectives of the Project.

Project Integration Management

It is the key area where its’ main focus is to integrate all other processes in the Project Management. This is critical; because integrating all the processes is not an easy task.

Project Scope Management

Project Scope must be defined properly before we start the Project. Almost all the processes are going to be affected; when there is a change in the Project Scope. If the Project Scope has been changed; at the end of the Project; it is difficult and costly to incorporate the changes.

The processes in this area are responsible to finalize and manage the scope.

Project Schedule Management

A Project is a temporary endeavor; so, it should have start and end dates. The processes in this area deal with; prepare, manage and controlling schedule management.

Project Cost Management

The processes in this area deal with the cost; estimating, managing, and controlling the costs lead to completing the Project within the Approved budget.

Project Quality Management

The success of the project also depends on the quality of the Project deliverables. Poor quality deliverables lead a Project rejection. The processes in this area deal with planning, managing, and controlling the Project quality.

Project Resource Management

Resources must be available in, timely manner to complete the project within the agreed Constraints. Not only the human resources but the resources which are directly or indirectly part of the Project (for example, Printer) should also be considered; to define, plan and manage the resources for the project delivery.

For example, for human resources; forming the team, training them, and managing the team; are required during the Project.

Project Communication Management

The processes in this area are responsible for defining, manage and controlling the communication happening in Project Management Process Groups.

Communication means; how frequently need to send the Project Status, whom to send the status, in what format, what details needs to be in place etc,

Project Risk Management

Identifying and managing risks in the early stage will help in Project Success. The processes in this area deal with risk management.

Project Procurement Management

Before we start any project, there must be a mutual business Agreement between both Buyer and the Seller. The processes in this area will deal with Procurement Management.

Project Stakeholder Management

The processes involved in this area are responsible to identify & manage the stakeholders who are going to influence the Project Success or Failure. Missing to involve the right stakeholders at right time will lead to a Project Failure.

We will discuss more on Project Management processes through upcoming Articles.
