Microsoft Project – How to use Outlines?

Outlines are used to group the Tasks in Microsoft Project. Outlines are useful for creating a hierarchy that will help us to better organize the project tasks. Through this article, we are going to discuss how we can use outlines in Microsoft Project.

Step 1. To use the outlines feature in Microsoft Project; first, we need to add the tasks to the project. If you already have the tasks added to the project you can start applying the outlines.

Step 2. Once the tasks are available/added, identify the tasks that you want to group under an outline.

Step 3. Select the identified tasks that you want to group under an outline; press Alt + Shift + Right Arrow keys to outline the selected tasks. Or clicking on the Task tab from the ribbon control, and then selecting the Indent Task icon (which is under the Schedule group) allows us to outline the selected Tasks.

These outlined tasks will become sub-tasks to the higher-level task(s).

As mentioned above, we can use outlines to organize the tasks in a way that makes it easier to understand and manage the project. For example, we can use outlines to group the tasks by phase, deliverable, or any other criterion that is relevant to the project.
