How to enable IIS on Windows?

Internet Information Services (IIS) is a Microsoft Web Server application that allows running Web Application on Windows Operating System.

The following steps explain how to enable IIS on Windows.

This article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 7

Step (1). Open Programs and Features window. See the post “How to open Programs and Features (OR) Add Remove Programs window in Windows Operating System?” to open the Programs and Features window.

Step (2). From the left side panel, click on the Turn Windows features on or off link. It will open the Windows Features dialog with the list of available Windows features, to allow the users to turn Windows features on or off.

Step (3). Look for the “Internet Information Services” item and select the check box before the item.

Step (4). Expand the “Internet Information Services” item by clicking on the “+” sign and selecting the sub-items you want to enable.

Step (5). Once you are done with your selection, click on the OK button to affect the changes. It will display the progress dialog to display the progress of applying changes.

Step (6). Now you have to test whether the IIS is enabled or not.

Step (6a). Click on the Start button and select the Run… item from the Start menu. It will display the Run dialog.

Step (6b). Type inetmgr in the Open: field and click on the OK button.

Step (6c). It will open the IIS Manager window if it is properly enabled.

Once the IIS is enabled on your system, you can run/test your own Web Applications.
